Flashback Friday – Fashion Tips

Because I care, and because I know you look to me for fashion advice, I wanted to share a few tips that my sisters and I learned while we were growing up in the 1960s. One wouldn’t always think to look to the past for such valuable advice. Isn’t it written that history repeats itself? Oh my, help us if it does.

Let’s jump back to sometime in the mid-1960s. This was a photo my Grandma Carter took of us when were visiting her in Jacksonville, Florida. She didn’t include the date, but she did at least write our names with this photo. I’ll take it.

I’m sure we had a lot of guidance with our drop dead fashion sense. But aren’t we rockin’ it?

Tips From The Trio:

From Sheri (far left): Never be afraid to mix pearls and shiny shirts with Keds. Especially if your hair has been perfectly shaped with Dippety Do.

From CeCe (far right): Mary Janes always look best when your socks match your aqua shirt which is just a few shades lighter than your shorts…which always call for Mary Jane shoes. CeCe shows her surprise at the thought of you not knowing this.

From Moi (center): Even though your mother will confess years later that she always felt sorry for you when you were standing near Sheri because everyone thought she was so cute and you looked so plain (insert therapy here), be bold with your decision to wear bright red socks that highlight the dingy blue Keds. It’s all good.

And for goodness sakes, never EVER be concerned that your pants go up to your knees when you sit down. Everyone likes to show a little leg. Am I right?

Project Runway, here we come.

Do you have any fashion tips to add? Are you a fashionista? Are you stilling wearing the old school Keds?

I'm such a pathetic has-been that maybe, MAYBE I'll look trendy if I wait long enough. I'm no fashionista. I wish I were. I need a stylist.

dippety-do, hehe. I so remember dippety do.

LOL! You are so funny! You all were so cute!

You three are so perfectly coordinated. What fashion sense at such a tender, young age.
Love the Mary Janes!
As I recall, there was nothing worse than to show up to school in highwaters.

I probably had that same headband that you're wearing. I love Sheri's Laugh In inspired top. Those were fun fashion days. Colorful too!

I love your looks!! The 70s were so cool. You all were so coordinated!!!

The only fashion tip I have is find a good suit in a solid nuetral tone and year round fabric that you like. Like black, navy or beige and build your wardrobe around it. Take part of the suit with you when you shop for stuff. Add like a skirt with a print or a sweater you could do instead of the blazer for a softer look. Buy different accessories for each outfit to mix it up. Stay in the color palette and the widen that by introducing colors in patterns and prints.
I used to work retail when they really gave you guidance when you picked out clothes. This was one tip I loved.
I also worked with one girl who always wore tan, white and black. She said it saved her tons and she always looked great. So you can also base your wardrobe on a set of colors :).

The thing about fashion is... when you wait long enough it all comes back in style. My girls wear mary janes, boys have to have keds and as for the shiney shirts well maybe not everything comes back.
;0)

I must not be much of a fashionista when I keep looking at the chair you are sitting in wondering what that fabric is! I had the same blue outfit your sister is wearing down to the shoes! My mom used to order our Keds from the Sears catalog. When I was in high school the grungier your Keds were the cooler you were!
