Roughin’ It

It’s that time of year again. Matt left for Boy Scout camp on Sunday. He really enjoys going to camp. Hanging with the guys, swimming in the lake, getting the sunscreen spray taken away because boys think it is funny to spray it into the fire. Memories.

Matt is not a boy interested in packing. I am not a Mom interested in procrastinating. Our preferences don’t always mesh in this arena. I tried to get Matt to pack earlier on Saturday. Matt wanted to pack Sunday morning. No way. I left him with the list and told him to take care of it. He is 13 years old now, you know. I finally went to bed late on Saturday evening with Matt still in his room “packing.”

Last week I purchased new tennis shoes and t-shirts for Matt’s camping trip. When Matt was packing late Saturday, he realized he could not find his new t-shirts. After a few minutes of frantic searching, he discovered that he had thrown away the bag containing the shirts. Friday was trash day. Luckily, Matt threw his shirts away after the trash was taken away. No harm, no foul – kinda. At this point, I am getting a bit irritated.

Before the camping trip, Doug took Matt to purchase all the gear he needed to earn his Fishing Merit Badge while away at Scout Camp. Matt is so proud of his new fishing rod.

While going over the basics of fishing with Matt, Doug found a bunch of old gear he himself used, like, 19 years ago.

Unfortunately, Matt ended up leaving all of the gear at home except for the fishing rod. Oh well.

After confirming that Matt had all the stuff he needed packed into his trunk, I drove him to the drop off point on Sunday morning. This is when I started getting a little misty-eyed.

No matter how irritated I was at his nonchalant packing skills, all was forgiven. Look at this young man. I am so proud of him. He made Order of the Arrow this year. Pretty cool accomplishment.

Of course, we must have the obligatory Mother-Son shot. I think we really do look alike.

As I watched Matt line up with all the other guys, I glanced back at my van.

Uh oh! Matt almost left his trunk in the van. Yikes. That would have made for a very uncomfortable week. I’m sure he would have missed his deodorant. Not.

A group shot before the gang leaves.

The guy is ready for camp. I miss him already.

Have your kids gone to camp this summer, or are they going? Do you let them pack for themselves, or are you still in charge of that stuff?

Teri, you two do look alike! Great photos! You must be proud of Matt. He sounds like my son who forgets things here and there too. No camp for my kids this year. They are under foot literally!

What happened to that Boy Scout motto?? I can't believe he left the trunk in the car! My girls came home from camp so stanky. Deodorant is such an contentious point in our house!

My youngest just returned from scout camp this past weekend. We remind him of what he needs to take and then let the chips fall where they may. But, it takes a lot of reserve for us to do that!

My sons missed out on camp this year, due to us moving:(

WOW! He does look just like you!

Hope he had a great time with his fellow scouts.

You two really do look alike. How proud you must be. What do you have to do to get the Order of the Arrow?

My kids go to camp every year. We have one that costs $10 for the whole week. That includes accomodations and food! This year, they couldn't go, unfortunately.

Asia, however, will be going to a camp about 4 hours away with her longest-time friend. That camp is one week long, returning late on a Saturday night, then 5:30 the very next morning she has to be back at another drop off point to pile onto a bus to go to Cheer training camp in Seattle.

That's a four hour bus ride, followed the next morning by a 15 or 16 hour bus ride.

Can you say BITCHY?? Glad I don't have to spend any part of those two weeks with her. My house will be so peaceful. Until her return.

Sigh...

I remember my daughter going to her first "school in nature" as we call it with kindergarten at age 5. She didn't let me pack for her - she wanted to do it herself and she did, too. My son wouldn't let me pack his things now, but he did when he was 10 or so.

Yes, you do look alike and I hope Matt has a wonderful week.

Awe, you have such great kids!
