Flashback Friday - Rolling Stones or Bust
**LAST CHANCE: Don’t forget to read Thursday’s post HERE to see how you can help me be QUEEN FOR A DAY!!! PUHLEEEEEEAAASSSSEEEE! (33whined in four syllables).
Now back to our regularly scheduled post…
Playing along with Candid Carrie today. Check out other bloggies’ photos after you relax here for a moment.
We travel way, way back to 1978 for today’s story. When I was in 10th grade, I met a girl in my neighborhood who would become my best friend. We hung around with each other every single moment. We were crazy together. Then Mary moved to a teeny, tiny town in Arkansas within a year of our meeting. I was devastated. We kept up our friendship by calling long distance often and by writing novel-length letters on legal-sized paper. We’re talking 20+ pages every time.
Mary flew back to visit me a couple of times during our remaining years in high school. I was even able to scrape up enough money myself to fly out to see Mary twice. One of those trips was in July 1978.
(see Mick Jagger on my shirt?)
Mary and I were HUGE Rolling Stones’ fans. The Stones were on their Some Girls tour that summer. We 17-year-olds got the bright idea that we would go to see the Stones together in New Orleans. Mary flew to my house for a week, then I flew to her house the following week. During that last week, we rode a Party Bus (yes, I’m sure this name thrilled the parents) to New Orleans from Arkansas. This trip included a ticket to the show, the overnight bus ride and all the beer and Coke you could drink. Mary and I were the youngest people on the bus. Again, thrilling the parents at this point.
To make sure we were safe, Mary’s mom paid for one of Mary’s guy friends to go along with us. He wasn’t much protection, trust me. Anyway, Mary and I were so excited. We took our seats near the back of the bus. We listened to the five eight-track tapes that the bus driver played over and over again all the way to New Orleans and back. One of those tapes was Joe Walsh’s “But Seriously Folks…” with “Life’s Been Good” on it. Regardless of how many times we heard this tape during that trip (dozens), Mary bought it when she got back to Arkansas. Every time I hear that song, I remember our trip.
Back to the trip…Mary and I couldn’t wait to see the Stones. We weren’t drinkers, so we were sober and ready when we rolled into New Orleans. Unfortunately, the guy behind wasn’t so ready. Just before arriving, we hear, “I’m puking, I’m puking!” Thanks for the warning, man. We had JUST ENOUGH time to pick up our feet as the vomit rolled under our seat. Classy. I remember looking at all the people sitting near us when the bus finally pulled into the parking lot at the Superdome. I couldn’t understand how all these people could be passed out when the Stones were just a few feet ahead. Nevermind. Mary and I dashed off that bus and headed straight for the front row of the Superdome.
There we no reserved seats, so you can imagine what the front row area competition was like. Cut throat. We waited for several hours before the opening acts came out. First was Van Halen. They were just becoming popular with “Running with the Devil.” I kept looking at David Lee Roth and saying, “He looks like a really ugly girl.” Still does. After their set and another good wait, the Doobie Brothers played a set. They were great! Then, a R E A L L Y loooooooong wait until a gymnastics family took the stage. Are you kidding me?
Finally at about 1:00 a.m., the Stones made it out onto the stage. They were incredible. At the time of this show, we set a record for the largest indoor concert ever – over 88,000 people. At some point during the show, I remember looking around and seeing people passed out under stairs and in aisles. Again, I wondered why in the world would you waste your time at THIS show if you were going to spend it under the stairs. I was naïve. But I was wide awake and watching the show.
The show ended at about 3:15 a.m. The only place to get anything to drink afterwards was from a place that wasn’t including ice with their drinks. We bought several hot Sprites for $3.50 each. That’s a lot of money for 1978. Whatever. We hopped back on the Party Bus (now more like a Snoozer Bus) and drove until mid-day back to Arkansas.
So, that’s my concert tale for Mary and me. There are SO many other stories for a later time.
Happy Birthday (again), Mary!

Great story & what a wonderful friendship. Thanks for the Friday Foto comment.
I love stories of friendship like that. Most of my closest girlfriends now were those that I made in high school. There is nothing like that time in your life.
Hey, thanks for visiting my site today. Next week, I am making a 3-tier yellow cake with lemon curd filling and lemon buttercream icing. Yummo!!
Oh, it makes me wish I had kept all of my photo booth pictures! Weren't those just the best???
Hey Girl! But wait, we weren't on the party bus. They had two buses going down, a "regular" and a "party bus". But in the end, I'm not sure one could tell the diff. I remember waiting forever after the show for the bus crowd to assemble so we could go home. No Bourbon Street for us gals.
I totally don't remember the gymnastics family but I do recall "Creature From the Black Lagoon" on video screens while we were waiting. I knew it took forever for Mick and Keith to come out but I had forgotten it was that late.
Oh yeah, and remember how we almost got crushed by the massive crowd? You shepherded us to safety (but got groped along the way)! And thanks for sharing the pix, I don't believe I have copies of those.
Hey Mary, I totally forgot about the movie clips. The gymnastics family got a lot of boos because people were really ready for the Stones. And yes, I didn't forget about the groping stuff. Kinda creepy.
But I DID forgot that our bus wasn't officially called the Party Bus...probably because there were so many wasted people on our bus.
Good times.
Ah, memories. I'm always passed out by 1 a.m., but these days it's not from drink. Or macaroni & cheese crack. Just plain ol' exhaustion.
That is so cool...my favorite picture is the last one! You can see how close you are!
Great story. You look like Jodie Foster in those photos. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the Joe Walsh flashback.
:-D
Alright, I am going to take a stab at rewriting a comment.
I had this eight track and the tee shirt (but not the same one you had). I had a mad crazy crush on a guy named Jim and we would roll down the windows on my 1976 Chevy Nova and scream all the words to Beast of Burden while riding around on country roads.
I really think that should have been the break through song on that eight track.
I reluctantly tossed my eight tracks when we moved a few years ago. I had all of them. I had a bright pink one by the BeeGees which didn't get much play time at all.
I'll never be your beast of burden
My back is broad but it's a hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me
I'll never be your beast of burden
I've walked for miles my feet are hurting
All I want is for you to make love to me
Am I hard enough
Am I rough enough
Am I rich enough
I'm not too blind to see
I'll never be your beast of burden
Memories of old friends are the best. I am sad that I lost touch with almost all of my old fiends. Shit...who knows...maybe I peed on them and they ran away.
Great photos and a great story!
Looking at pictures like this makes me wish I wasn't a purger. Can you believe I have thrown away pictures? Like ones I took of my cat when I was 8? Long gone. Along with all my pictures of summer camps - thrown away because I didn't remember who any of those people were.
But...the Stones...I cannot imagine an act waiting that long to come across the stage. And a gymnastics thing, too? Unbelievable!
LOVE THESE... Love the stones, love Mick Jagger!
Loved the story -- I've kind of lost touch with alot of my friends over the years -- Thanks for sharing the photo's love them
What a great story...what a great long-term friendship!
I used to go to all the concerts when I was in high school and for a few years after, but the last one I went to was in 1986 (ZZTop). I kinda lost interest after that. There really wasn't anybody I wanted to pay to see...UNTIL a few years ago Aerosmith came to Omaha and I WANTED to go to that! I checked on tickets and they were $120! That's a far cry from the $18 or so that I had paid years before. I chose not to go because if I was paying $120 to see Steven Tyler then he had better be in my house and not wearing any pants. THAT would be worth the money! hehe
what an awesome story - and how cool to have been able to keep in touch over all those years.
great pics too
Ok, one of my best friends just moved off to CA last night, so this was a bitter-sweet story for me. It's good to have friends, ain't it?
I love, love, love "Life's Been Good"...and it's so true! Looks like it has been for you too. :)
Those are really fun pics! Love the Micck Jagger shirt--I'm a huge Stones fan too!
What a cool story....and that sounds like it would have been an awesome concert (except for maybe those gymnasts). :)
My high school friends from waaaay back are reliving 'the days' with a Springsteen concert in the Boston area. If I were there - I'd have brought the doobie...and I don't mean Brothers.
I used to have such a HUGE crush on Mick Jagger! One of my college boyfriends was so jealous of Mick that he torched one of my favorite Stones posters. Needless to say, THAT relationship didn't last too long!
What a great story! I love the photos. I have some of those "photo booth" strips w/ friends too.
What I remember most about Mary was her constantly telling me to 'pipe down', and one time when we were on the (totally uncool and pathetic) bus and y'all were sitting in front of me. My foot hit something and so I asked her if that was her foot. She said, "No, it was my hand." So stupid, but that's what I remember.
LOVE this story!! I was totally born in the wrong decade.....
Thanks for Sharing the Caption Love! I can tell you're a rocker chick, so I'm pretty sure you'll be interested in this. I'm caving in to the commercial pressure and hosting a giveaway/contest starting tomorrow. I just returned from Asbury Park NJ, home to Jersey roots rock, aka Springsteen, Bon Jovi, Van Zandt, etc. I've got a couple of cool prizes to give away to celebrate the Dog Days of Summer, so tune please tune in!
Ahhh, the good ole days. You were much luckier than I though. ZZ Top and Cheap Trick were the only big names I have ever seen in person.
